Louisville crime numbers, empty houses, and a monitored alarm

Chief Paul Humphrey told the Courier-Journal on January 9, 2026 that Louisville had 114 homicides in 2025 versus 145 in 2024 — down more than 21 percent. Burglaries, carjackings, and shootings were down; thefts from cars were up slightly. Mayor Greenberg’s Safe Louisville figures in July 2026 reported homicides down 22 percent and non-fatal shootings down 28 percent. That mix is citywide. It is not a reason to leave a Highlands side door unlocked on a Tuesday while you sit downtown.

What Chief Humphrey published in January 2026

Citywide, homicides fell from 145 in 2024 to 114 in 2025, down more than 21 percent. Burglaries, carjackings, and shootings were down. Thefts from cars were up slightly. Those are Louisville Metro Police Department citywide counts, as Chief Paul Humphrey and the Courier-Journal reported on January 9, 2026. They mix Old Louisville, the Highlands, Germantown, Crescent Hill, PRP, and downtown. A quieter street is not 24/7 monitoring, and a neighbor on the porch is not an ADT operator. We do not publish neighborhood crime rates.

Direction on the citywide total is real. Mayor Greenberg’s Safe Louisville report in July 2026 added that homicides were down 22 percent and non-fatal shootings down 28 percent. The reason people still order is occupancy: porch packages, a tried door, and houses that sit empty after drop-off or a commute on I-64 or I-65.

Boxes on Highlands, Old Louisville, and Germantown porches

Walkable streets are why people add a doorbell. Highlands, Old Louisville, Germantown, and Crescent Hill houses collect boxes on porches while owners are at work, on I-64, or downtown. A camera you check yourself is useful. It is not the same as ADT calling you when a door opens.

The system is for the hours no one is looking out the window — not a claim that St. Matthews or Prospect is dangerous.

Empty houses after JCPS drop-off and the river commute

JCPS drop-off empties in-city two-stories. Oldham County, Bullitt County, Shelby County, Greater Clark, and New Albany-Floyd empty the rest of the map until pickup. A UPS night empties Okolona and Fern Creek doors the same way. That is when people want the system armed.

What people actually order after a missing box or a leftover keypad

Door and window sensors, including the garage and any extra unit if you have one. A doorbell camera if packages sit out front. Outdoor cameras if the driveway holds a car overnight. Cellular backup so the panel still reaches ADT when LG&E or Wi-Fi drops. That is the Louisville order, not a twelve-camera quote unless you ask for one.

Is Louisville “safe enough” to skip monitoring?

Citywide homicides were down in that January 2026 report. Porch theft and empty houses did not take the year off. Monitoring is for the hours you commute, work a UPS night, or leave for school drop-off — not a verdict on your ZIP.

Do quieter streets like St. Matthews still order ADT?

Yes. St. Matthews, Crescent Hill, Prospect, and Jeffersontown orders are usually school-day empties, leftover keypads, and packages on the porch. Same ADT watch as Old Louisville. Independent cities are not Louisville Metro Police. We name the desk from the ZIP. We do not invent neighborhood crime rates.

Will Louisville Metro Police come if the alarm trips?

ADT can request help based on the alert type. Inside Louisville Metro that is typically Louisville Metro Police. St. Matthews, Jeffersontown, Jeffersonville, and other cities dispatch differently. Confirm the office from your ZIP. Louisville Metro homeowners still file the $15 yearly permit through FARU at (502) 574-3278.
